Χρυσό η Καραγιάννη, χάλκινο η Δήμογλου στο Παγκόσμιο Πρωτάθλημα Στίβου για αθλητές με αναπηρία 2006 στο Άσσεν της Ολλανδίας

Χρυσό μετάλλιο κατέκτησε χθες η Ανθή Καραγιάννη στο Άλμα εις μήκος στο Παγκόσμιο Πρωτάθλημα Στίβου για αθλητές με αναπηρία που διεξάγεται στην πόλη Άσσεν της Ολλανδίας από 2 έως 10 Σεπτεμβρίου 2006. Η Καραγιάννη σημείωσε ρεκόρ αγώνων με επίδοση 5,58m ξεπερνώντας την Ουκρανή Σβιτλάνα Γκορμπένκο (5,41m) που κατέκτησε το αργυρό μετάλλιο, ενώ το χάλκινο μετάλλιο κατέκτησε η Αλεξάνδρα Δήμογλου με επίδοση 5,20.

Caring partners

Claire Miller’s sons Sam and Harry are autistic. Her 11-month-old baby may also have autism – she’s waiting for a diagnosis. She cares for her children and her husband, who has schizophrenia. She says her family would fall apart without the support she receives from the Surrey-based charity Disability Challengers. “They have been my lifeline. Challengers is the only respite we have from the children,” says Miller.

Multiple sclerosis: Disproving the myths of disability

As a physical therapy student in the 1970s, Thomas Holtackers learned to help people overcome injuries that interfered with their daily activities. When Holtackers was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), he supplemented his physical therapy work with insight gained from personal experience. These days, a retired Holtackers actively encourages positive thinking to help people with disabilities meet the challenges of daily life.

My Brother Is Not His Disability

June 1, 2006 – Last July, I took a car trip with Kevin, my 15-year-old brother. The music was blasting and the sun was shining through the windows, warming our faces. We were singing loudly to the tune on the radio—Bruce Springsteen, of course. We cruised down the highway enjoying the summer heat and each other’s presence. I looked over and couldn’t help but feel immensely happy when I saw his face with its beautiful smile that cures all pain and those deep blue eyes that see the world in a perfect light. The song ended, and he hit repeat.
