More than 35,000 people died in traffic accidents in the EU in 2009, down more than 33% from 2001, but the EU wants to halve it by 2020. “A lot has been achieved, but many people don’t even realise the risks when they are on the road,” says Dieter-Lebrecht Koch who made the report on European road safety 2011-2020. The EU should aim for “Vision Zero”, the prevention of all road deaths, he says.
